Lyon won their 5th Ligue 1 title under Gérard Houllier, with Bordeaux finishing second and Lille in third. Pauleta of Paris Saint-Germain was the top scorer with 21 goals.
Three teams joined Ligue 1 this season: Le Mans, Nancy, and Troyes, all promoted from Ligue 2. On the other hand, Caen, Bastia and Istres were relegated after failing to maintain their top-flight status.
Lyon’s title win was their fifth in a row, as they became the first team in French football history to achieve such a feat.
